Masterworks

Manfredi_Allegory_of_the_Four_Seasons.jpgIf there are giants of 18th century baroque music, those giants are Vivaldi, Bach and Handel. In this series of 6 concerts we are presenting some of the very best instrumental compositions by these 3 composers.

At that time it was customary to publish music in sets of 6 or 12 compositions of a similar style. Vivaldi's concertos were the foundation on which Bach developed his instrumental style. Vivaldi's opus 8 concertos are a set of 12 concertos which include the famous “Four Seasons”. Vivaldi probably composed and performed these Concertos before he published the whole set, but in the published edition he included the set of sonnets which the music describes, a brilliant stroke which has ensured the enduring popularity of these concertos.

Ardee Baroque 2009

ArdeeThe Irish Baroque Orchestra returns to its winter home in Ardee once again.

Ardee Baroque is a small jewel of a festival which takes place each year in November. While it may be cold and snowing outside, the evocative churches and castles of mid-Louth provide a warm and atmospheric backdrop to a series of concerts and recitals by world-class musicians, from Ireland and abroad. Anchored by the Irish Baroque Orchestra, directed by Monica Huggett, Ardee Baroque combines performances of music from the 17th and 18th centuries with education work, children’s concerts and activities, and lectures, all leavened by a welcoming and informal atmosphere, in the traditional villages of Ardee and Collon. Ardee Baroque is supported by Louth County Council, the Arts Council and Fáilte Ireland.

Abendmusik: Cantatas in Context

The term Abendmusik is borrowed from the tradition of evening concerts of sacred music established in Lubeck's Marienkirche in the late seventeenth century. The programme takes its inspiration from the liturgical milieu within which JS Bach composed his cantatas, masses and organ chorales, and the important relationship that existed in this tradition between scripture and music. The principal Gospel reading of the Lutheran Sunday liturgy was both proclaimed and explained by the music which surrounded it, clothing it in the bright array of musical artifice for the purposes of illumination and interpretation.
