Handel's 'Messiah'
The Irish Baroque Orchestra's annual production of Handel's Messiah is an established highlight of the December calendar. It is performed on period instruments and in full chorus, capturing Handel's much-loved work in all its original colour and splendour.
Hailed as a master of sacred and secular music, Handel's talent of composing for voice and instrument shines through in Messiah, which Irish audiences first took to their hearts in 1742. This production is led by Peter Whelan, Artistic Director of IBO, with the IBO's own choir.
Dublin’s deep connection to Messiah is more than a historical footnote—it is a living legacy, and the IBO’s performance at the National Opera House captures the spirit of that original premiere.
Under the direction of Peter Whelan, the orchestra’s period instruments and expert musicianship breathe fresh life into every aria and chorus, offering a vivid encounter with Handel’s timeless oratorio.
These concerts are more than a seasonal tradition—they are a tribute to Ireland's cultural heritage. Whether you are a seasoned aficionado or a curious newcomer, the Irish Baroque Orchestra’s Messiah promises an inspiring musical journey, blending scholarly insight with electrifying live performance.
